Hello, my name is Jessie and welcome to the _________. I will be taking you through the first portion of the tour, which exhibits The Declaration of IndependenceÃâ"the most cherished document of United States of America . Follow me please. Now does anyone know the date when the document was adopted. (Wait for responses) That is correct; the document was officially adopted on July 4, 1776. The document was formally entitled, The unanimous Declaration of the Thirteen united States of America , and was primarily written by Thomas Jefferson. If you notice on the placard, the word united in the document does not begin with the capital letter, signifying the fact that the thirteen colonies were independent states rather than one nation. Common Sense worked like a charm on colonists and the Declaration of Independence was adopted by the dissenting colonists. Few people realize that although Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence, that there was actually a committee formed to be sure that the colonists position was clearly presented. Raise your hand if you can name the other members of the c ommittee. (Call on a few raised hands) Thats right: Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Roger Sherman, and Robert R. Livingston. Raise your hands if you have heard the famous phrase, Life, Liberty and Pursuit of Happiness. Wow- everybody, thats good! But do you all know what it means? According to the founding fathers, these are the essential rights endowed to humans. Does anyone know the three main parts of Declaration of Independence. (Wait for responses) The first part outlines the importance of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness and that all men are created equal. The second part describes the right to revolt against government and a listing of grievances against the King. Finally, of course, the last part is the colonists official declaration of independence from England. Raise your hand if you know the total number of grievances against King George III.
